Happy Birthday Moulin Rouge!

Iconic Aussie movie Moulin Rouge! turns 20 this week! It had its Australian premiere on May 25 2001. Many, many MCTV members worked on this movie, which was one of the first international blockbusters to be filmed at the (then) new Fox Studios. The movie made $179.2 million at the box office off a $50 million budget and won 2 Academy awards, having been nominated for 8. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor star along with Richard Roxburgh, Jim Broadbent and John Leguizamo in this “jukebox, musical, romantic drama” film directed by Aussie legend Baz Luhrmann.

Movies like Moulin Rouge! really brought Sydney to the world’s attention as a film making mecca and paved the way for all the great movies that have been flimed here over the past 2 decades including all of these. Much has changed in the 20 years since this movie was made, but MCTV remains, we’re still placing more people more often!!

New Asgard Appears

More pictures have sneaked out of the Thor: Love and Thunder set this week, with the Daily Mail reporting a secret Asgard main street has appeared in Western Sydney. It’s amazing to see the craft and detail that goes into making these epic movies. While we can’t confirm this story, MCTV is still sending extras to set weekly, lots of roles to fill the incredible scenes with background characters. Check out the full story here.

Previous movies have used Scotland and Georgia in the US to stand in for Norway, for some armchair travel you can compare the set to these locations here.

Meanwhile, Thor (aka Chris Hemsworth) is posting photos from the set showing off his Marvel God physique!

Must not be afraid of Lions….

We’re loving the new suite of ING ads which include MCTV talent…. and a lion!!

Extras had to dress up and attend a night shoot last October to film the party scene. Check out the very clever Wizard of Oz references throughout the ad (above).

MCTV extras also appear in the two ads below, which link the campaign together well. Congratulations to everyone who worked on these, they look great! Well done especially to Laudine H, Antonio S and Lester J who all got upgrades.

 

MCTV – Only in America

Back in October last year over 40 MCTV members were filmed for this Dupixent commercial. The spot will never screen in Australia, but has been airing in the US. It’s amazing how the crew made downtown Ultimo look like the States, using US post boxes, fire hydrants and an American voiceover.

It’s really hard to track down some of these jobs, as they aren’t screened locally and take a while in post production. In doing some research, we found that the Google Maps car must have taken a shot as filming was occurring!!

Sadly, no one got paid to be on Google Maps, but everyone on the ad earned an average of almost $900.

Sydney Shines in Series Funding

Two Sydney-filmed series have been awarded funding in the latest announcement from Screen Australia.

Record breaking series, Bump, which aired earlier this year on Stan will be funded for a second 10 episode series. Likewise, the award winning thriller, The Secrets she Keeps has also achieved a share of the $5.6 million Screen Australia funding for a second six part series.

MCTV extras appeared in both of these popular series. It’s great news they will be returning.

Russell’s Poker Face Coming Soon

Hot on the heels of his role as Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder, details are emerging of Russell Crowe’s new project, Poker Face. The movie is a psychological thriller and will be filmed in NSW. Another Thor star, Natalie Portman is also rumoured to be starring in the movie.

According to Dateline, Gary Fleder will direct the film, in which Crowe plays Jake, a tech billionaire plays a high stakes game of poker with his childhood friends. The friends have a love hate relationship with the host, a master game-player/planner, and he has concocted an elaborate scheme designed to bring a certain justice to all of them. However, Jake finds himself re-thinking his strategy when his Miami mansion is overtaken by a dangerous home invader whose previous jobs have all ended in murder and arson.

Shooting is reported to be commencing in the next month or two, watch this space…

 

 

More Pieces coming Together

After reports of filming on the Central Coast, Blue Mountains and various Sydney locations, it was Surry Hills’  turn to host Pieces of Her over the weekend. As reported by the Daily Telegraph, Game of Thrones Star, Joe Dempsie (above) was on set with a large crowd of extras, including heaps of MCTV members, with Surry Hills standing in for 1980s America.

Unusual Suspects Coming Soon!

The Unusual Suspects is a brand new 4 part miniseries. The female-led heist caper was filmed in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs last year and looks amazing in this trailer. The show stars Aina Dumlao, Miranda Otto and Michelle Vergara Moore, with a supporting cast that includes both well known and up and coming Aussie actors.

The plot of the show centres around the theft of a $16 million necklace from self-made businesswoman Roxanne Waters’ (Michelle Vergara Moore) home in an elaborate heist, the ensuing police investigation exposes cracks in Eastern Sydney’s sparkling façade. With the stakes higher than ever, can the masterminds stop themselves from turning on each other, or will they discover a friendship worth more than diamonds?

The series is produced by award-winning filmmaking duo Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford,whose recent credits include Lion, nominated for six Academy Awards® and four Golden Globe Awards as well as Berlin Syndrome, Dirt Music, The Other Guy and The Unlisted. It will premiere on SBS and SBS on Demand on Thursday 3 June at 8.30pm, with the full series available to watch immediately.
