Rebel to direct ‘The Deb’
Rebel Wilson is set to direct her first feature, ‘The Deb’. Set in Australia, it’s a musical “that brings the bush into the city.” Wilson will also co-star in the movie.
‘The Deb’, Wilson explained to Deadline, tells the tale of two young women from different cultures. One’s from the bush and the other’s a cynical city girl. Both are searching for self-acceptance — and a date to the Deb.
Taylah Simpkins, (Natalie Abbott), is the farm girl who hasn’t been schooled in big-city ways, while her cousin Maeve (Charlotte MacInnes) has an attitude problem. Also cast are Tara Morice, Jay Laga’aia and Shane Jacobson.
Wilson has likened the movie’s appeal to that of worldwide Aussie hits ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ and ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’.
The movie will be shot on location in Sydney and rural New South Wales. Rebel has been posting shots of her new Bondi pad for the duration of the shoot.
Submissions have started. Good luck everyone who has been submitted so far. More to come…
